Game Page

Since I host two Halloween parties during the season, one with children and the other adults, many people have asked what type of party games we play.  I decided to add this page to Mullica Manor with a list of references and suggestions.  I’ve also added a list of Halloween/Horror themed games that you also may enjoy playing either around Halloween or throughout the year.

Halloween/Horror Party/Group Games for Kids and Adults

I call the following games traditional since they are regular birthday/party games that you can modify for Halloween:

Pin the ____ on the ____

-         Tail : Cat

-         Horns : Devil

-         Nose : Pumpkin

-         Bolts:  Frankenstein

-         Wart : Witch

Halloween Twister – Put scary or funny monsters on the squares and spinner.

Halloween Bingo – Halloween

Halloween Musical Chairs – Musical chairs with scary or funny Halloween Music

Pass the Pumpkin (Hot Potato) – Same as hot potato; pass around a pumpkin and when the music stops the person holding the pumpkin is out.

Halloween Pictionary

The following games I found on the website http://familycrafts.about.com/cs/halloweengames/a/halloweengames.htm

Find the Bones – If you have a graveyard setup in your yard, the parents can hide fake bones, insects, reptiles behind tombstones.  The person who gets the most stuff wins.

Candy Corn Relay Race* - Designate a starting line and a finish line. Set out a bowl full of candy corn for each player at the starting line and an empty bowl at the finish line. The players must use a large spoon to scoop candy corn out of the full bowl and then carry it to the empty bowl and fill it. They cannot spill any candy corn or use their hands! If any candy corn falls off the spoon, they must immediately pick it up and bring it back to the starting line bowl and start over with that scoopful

Halloween Guess Who* - When each guest arrives, they get a piece of paper taped the their back with a Halloween character or item written on it. The object of the game is for each guest to figure out who they are. Everyone goes around and asks the other guests questions about their mystery character or item. The guests can only answer yes or no to the questions.

Halloween Word Scramble* - Give each party goer a piece of paper with a longer, Halloween related word at the top of the page, such as Halloween , scarecrow, or Frankenstein. Set a time limit of a 1 - 3 minutes and see how many words, at least 3 letters long, can be made using only the letters from the long word.

Zombie Game* - One person is 'IT', the others must sit or lay as motionless and expressionless zombies. The person who is 'IT' must do whatever they can to make the zombies smile, giggle, or wiggle in any way without touching them! When 'IT' gets a zombie to wiggle, giggle, or smile, that zombie then joins 'IT' in trying to get others to smile, giggle, or wiggle. The last zombie wins!

Fear Factor - Another game I added to my list which the kid’s love (they keep taking about it) is what I call Fear Factor.  I basically run it like the fear factor show during the eating contests.  Each person must eat and finish a certain item before going on to the next round.  If they don’t eat it they’re out.  I usually go to a local Asian market for the teenagers and we use vegetables for the younger kids.  You should have seen how many kids got eliminated with grape tomatoes.

Survivor – I’m working on a mini-survivor like game for my kid’s party this year.  I’ll post more about it when I work out the details.

Werewolf

Werewolf is a game that takes place in a small village which is haunted by werewolves.

Each player is secretly assigned a role - Werewolf, Villager, or Seer (a special Villager). There is also a Moderator player who controls the flow of the game.

The game alternates between night and day phases. At night, the Werewolves secretly choose a Villager to kill. Also, the Seer (if still alive) asks whether another player is a Werewolf or not. During the day, the Villager who was killed is revealed and is out of the game. The remaining Villagers then vote on the player they suspect is a Werewolf. That player reveals his/her role and is out of the game.

Werewolves win when there are an equal number of Villagers and Werewolves. Villagers win when they have killed all Werewolves. Werewolf is a social game that requires no equipment to play, and can accommodate almost any large group of players.

Modifying Games for Horror Theme

I’ve added this games to show that you can modify a game to fit the Halloween theme.

Time’s Up

Time’s Up uses famous people as a base; therefore I added famous monsters and people associated with Halloween/Horror.  Time's Up! is a party game for teams of two or more players (best with teams of two). The same set of famous names is used for each of three rounds. In each round, one member of a team tries to get his teammates to guess as many names as possible in 30 seconds. In round 1, almost any kind of clue is allowed. In round 2 no more than one word can be used in each clue (but unlimited sounds and gestures are permitted). In round 3, no words are allowed at all.

Wits & Wagers

Wits & Wagers is a game that is based on numbers.  Therefore I’ve created questions such as how many people were killed in Friday the 13th.

Wits & Wagers is trivia made fun! Not a trivia buff? It doesn’t matter. Wits & Wagers brings out the excitement of a Vegas-style casino by letting you bet on anyone’s answer. So you can win by making educated guesses, by playing the odds, or by knowing the interests of your friends. Strike it big with one of the high payout answers and you’ll be cheering like you just hit the jackpot!

Wits & Wagers is a fast-paced party game that is perfect for the extended relatives over the holidays. It can be taught in 2 minutes, played in 20 minutes, and works best when played in teams with a large group of people.
